Overview

The Planning Board serves as an advisory body for requests such as rezoning, ordinance amendments, planned developments, and major subdivision sketch plans. It is responsible for reviewing and approving or denying requests for major subdivision preliminary and final plats, landscaping plans for projects over five acres, alternative landscaping plans, and multifamily developments. Additionally, the Planning Board provides input on special projects, including zoning studies, comprehensive reviews of ordinance language, and various City plans

There is one anticipated in-City seat vacancy on the Morehead City Planning Board. If you are interested in serving, please see the Apply to Serve section below.

Apply to Serve

If you are interested in serving, please complete a Citizen Participation application. Applications may be obtained from City Clerk Cathy Campbell at (252) 726-6848 x139 or may be found on the Town’s website HERE.  

If you reside in the extra-territorial jurisdiction and are interested in serving, a Carteret County application is required to be completed. A City application is also encouraged to be completed and submitted. Extra-territorial members are appointed by the Carteret County Board of Commissioners. The Town of Morehead City Council makes recommendations to the Carteret County Commissioners for ETJ appointments. The contact for the Carteret County application is 252-728-8450, ext. 8002.   

Planning Board Members

The Planning Board is a seven-member Board consisting of four In-City members appointed by the City Council and three extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) members appointed by the Carteret County Board of Commissioners. The chairman and vice-chairman are elected annually by the members of the Planning Board.
